Hiking is a refreshing (and challenging!) way to enjoy summer in the mountains. You can trek out with hot coffee and watch the sun rise over the Sierra Nevadas, or gather the kiddos for a nice jaunt up the hill, but there is nothing like reaching your destination with a stunning vista of Lake Tahoe's big blue waters. Since summer is just around the bend, we're sharing our favorite Lake Tahoe hikes the whole family will love, and they offer views hard to beat in California!
Stateline Lookout Trail
When it comes to vistas and standing on the edge of Lake Tahoe, this is our all-time favorite hike! It's easily accessible, doesn't take long to reach the top, and a hidden gem in the area! This 1-mile roundtrip local ‘hike' is actually what many would consider a stroll. You'll find locals ascending with their dogs and kids on a regular basis. The trail is actually an old fire road that begins in Nevada and ends at the old California State fire lookout. The word that comes to mind is ‘breathtaking' when you reach the lookout point. Read up on its history. Take a seat at one of the benches among the wildflowers and gaze out at east, south, and west Lake Tahoe. It's a great place to just breathe.
Eagle Falls
Another favorite on the west shore of Lake Tahoe is Eagle Falls! This moderate hike follows a trail leading into the Destination Wilderness, and is only 2-miles roundtrip. An excellent hike for the whole family it offers stunning views of Emerald Bay, and you can hike further past the bridge into Eagle Lake, where you can take a cool dip before hiking back down. The trail entrance is right off Highway 89 across from Emerald Bay. But beware, it can get very busy in the summer with tourists. We suggest going at the beginning or end of the day to avoid crowds.
If you're looking for more challenging/longer day hikes, don't hesitate to contact our Squaw Valley Lodge Front Desk for assistance. We can also make recommendations where to ‘gear up' or places around Tahoe to supply picnic food and drinks for your adventure!
